Collectable Merry-Go-Rounds

Goffredo Colombani is the only craftsman in Europe who produces his Merry-go-rounds and music boxes entirely by hand. Working in this way is a specific way of life: Goffredo Colombani refuses the strategy of industrial mass production; his models are inspired by Merry-go-rounds from the 19th and 20th centuries. They are either unique pieces or part of limited editions. Their excellent quality turns each one into a piece of art.
Goffredo Colombani lives and works in an isolated house in the woods on the beautiful Lake Orta in northern Italy, far away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

Many different types of wood

All the objects are made entirely of wood: the cylindrical bodies are poplar wood, the turned ones are lime wood and alder wood, curved parts are birch, structural parts are beech wood and the mechanism boxes are made of special acoustic fir wood.
The music box mechanisms are first quality Swiss made. They have 18 to 28 notes in the smaller pieces and up to 70 notes in the bespoke pieces. There are also mechanisms available which play 30 notes and have interchangeable discs which enable playing of different tunes. The making of the animal figures is also unique, they are hand carved from solid blocks using a special miniature drill, all the painting is entirely done by hand, the colours are based on aniline or on synthetic resins. Even the packaging is hand made: the unique pieces are shipped in beautiful poplar wood boxes finished in decorated blue/white paper, the small pieces also come in their own charming hand made box. Each bespoke piece takes up to 400 hours of work, while 8 to 25 hours are needed for the single pieces of the small series.

IMPORTANT

These miniature carousels and music boxes are made with great love and passion by a craftsman who believes in the high quality of his work. The value of the pieces is therefore going to increase in time. Please note also that their are not toys, and that small differences are a proof for 100% hand work.
Some of my works are exposed at the Museum of the "Cavallo Giocattolo" in Grandate (CO).
